NDSU Studio Remodel

Design Concept:

This interior design studio is in the NDSU Memorial Union on the second floor. This is a wonderful location for creativity and innovation with natural light pouring in from the south. To allow even more light to enter the space, I designed the north wall to be entirely Dirtt Wall systems. This gives an outdoor view for both sides of the studio. Because this space is being used by college students and professors, the overall design is very modern and sophisticated. A natural color palette of green, caramel, and black cover the walls, furnishings, and accessories. Wood finishes are on the floor and wall details to keep the space feeling fresh and loaded with natural elements. Green, leafy wall covering is displayed on several walls which makes the space feel closer to the outdoors. According to my research, natural colors, organic textures, and exposure to natural light all improve productivity.

Right at the front of the studio, the NDSU Interior Design logo is front and center on a large wall. This ensures that people know exactly where they are and what this space is about. The common area is just to the left of the main entrance, and this is a space for students and teachers alike to relax, eat, and mingle. A beautiful, white kitchen captures the attention of visitors on a raised dining area. There is a ramp to get up to this area for ultimate accessibility, and it is lined with a modern wire railing. Additionally, there is a designated space for working on messier projects with a large island and plenty of storage. This common area is divided from the main studio spaces with a foldable wall for extra flexibility.

Behind this movable wall are the two studio classrooms. Students can choose between a large sit-to-stand desk, a chair with writing pad, or a counter height table to do their work or listen to lectures. I found in my research that having the different seating arrangements allows students to decide where they work best and how they are most creative and efficient. This will eventually lead to more success in the classroom. Overhead, 4-foot acoustical fixtures capture the eye as they keep the space bright and comfortable for all the necessary tasks. The acoustical element of these lights will permit collaboration to occur while others can remain focused. These light fixtures are square which give an overall modern feel to the room. On the walls in the classroom areas, there are accent lights to bring the focus to the student’s projects. These lights highlight all the work that goes on in this room year-round.
